RNA 编辑(RNA editing)是指由基因转录后,在mRNA中插入、缺失或替换而改变DNA模板的遗传信息,最终导致翻译出氨基酸序列不同的蛋白质。RNA编辑的结果扩大了遗传信息,使生物体能更好的适应生存环境。该现象最早在布氏锥虫的线粒体中被发现,在COX2转录本中存在4个非DNA编码的U残基,后来在高等植物的叶绿体和线粒体、一些真菌的线粒体、以及动物细胞和病毒中都发现这种非DNA编码现象。在植物细胞器中最为典型的是出现C → U的转变。RNA编辑会造成核苷酸的改变,进而引起编码氨基酸的变化,因此,RNA的正常编辑对线粒体功能的正常发挥起着重要作用。Wei等对云南红莲型雄性不育水稻atp9基因的RNA 编辑进行研究,推测RNA 编辑可能与CMS相关。利用转基因技术将未编辑的atp9 基因转入育性正常的烟草中,结果出现了CMS现象,这直接证实了atp9 基因的RNA 编辑与CMS 的相关性。

RNA editing regered to the molecular processes in which the genetic information of DNA molecule was altered through mRNA base insertion, deletion or replacement after gene tanscription, thus resulting in amino acid sequence changes of the encoded protein. RNA editing expanded the genetic information, thus making the organisms adapt to environment better. This phenomenon was first reported in mitochondria of the Trypanosoma brucei with four non-DNA-encoded U residues in the COX2 transcript. Later the non-coding DNA was found in chloroplasts and mitochondria in higher plants, fungi mitochondria, animal cells and viruses. The common type of RNA editing in plant organelle was conversion of C to U. RNA editing could cause nucleotide changes, thereby resulting in the amino acid alterations. Therefore, RNA editing played an important role in the normal mitochondrial function. Wei et al studied the RNA editing for the atp9 in Yunnan HL type male sterility line, they speculated that RNA editing may be associated with the CMS. In another report, CMS was induced after transferring unedited atp9 gene into normal fertility tobacco, confirmed the correlationship between the RNA editing for the atp9 and CMS.
